5 Best Golden Retriever Grooming Tools: Essential Guide!

In GROOMING by Rachael Summers1 Comment

Whilst a Golden Retriever may hold some of the best traits known to dog. There are definitely a few things that are a downside when it comes to their shedding.

I actually currently live in an apartment and it gets absolutely everywhere. It can be so difficult to get my dog (Bella’s) hair out and it just goes all over the place. However, throughout the time ow having her, I’ve managed to find a few essential tools that help me reduce the amount of hair that she should around the apartment.

If you live in a house, they’re lucky you as you may have a little bit more space to play around with. Me, however on the other hand, well that’s another story. From living in a confined space, it has had its pros and cons. As I’ve learned a few skills that I maybe wouldn’t have if I didn’t live in this apartment.

But no matter where you live or what you know this post will be useful to you…as I will be covering a list of the best golden retriever grooming tools for you to use here shortly.

A few things we will cover here

Here is what I’ll be covering with you in this post. I will explain how to maintain and keep your dogs coat healthy looking by teaching you how to groom your dog. As well as reduce the amount of shedding around the house.

Stick around! As there’s going to be plenty of useful information for you to read in this post. For those of you who are not quite familiar with grooming tools, well, I have a little bit of information for you to read beforehand.

In the following section of this post, I’m going to discuss what purposes you may use grooming tools for.

Why do you need grooming tools?

There are many different purposes for grooming tools and one of the main reasons for grooming a dog is to potentially keep them clean and healthy. Now you may be thinking how does that actually affect the health of the dog in any form or shape.

Well to your surprise, the actual way that grooming can keep them healthy is by removing any debris or dirt away from their skin. Which in turn, will result in good healthy skin, preventing any further damage or harm that could cause further problems later in their life.

Grooming tools are also used to maintain a dog’s natural wastage of their fur coat. This is an especially important part of a golden retrievers life as they tend to shed a lot of hair throughout the course of the year.

I personally use grooming Tools on a regular basis for my golden retriever.  and by the end of reading this post, you will know exactly how often you should be using them and what tools would be best for you to use too.

Everything has been personally tested by me and we will go on to discuss how I tested it with the tools in the following sections.

its not one fits all

It’s not just one size fits all

You’ll find that different tools have different purposes as you may use brushes and Combs to get rid of additional fur.  what do you mean use clippers to trim down the nails or rakes to de-mat or detangle your dog’s coat?

Not to worry as everything will be explained thoroughly to you and as mentioned by the end of reading this post. You will know everything you need to know into taking the best care of your pup.

And in doing so this will result in you being a very happy parent with a very happy puppy. So first things first and that means teaching you on how to use the tools. As there is no point in buying them if you don’t know what they do.

So the first thing that we will go over is exactly how to groom a Golden Retriever.  there are many different ways as depending on what purpose you will be grooming them for will depend on how you approach the grooming in the first place.

But, for most of you who are just at home and looking for an efficient way of taking care of your dog from the comfort of your home. Well, there’s a quick and easy process for that. and I’ll cover just that in the following section.

How to groom a golden retriever (The right way!)

I could make this a whole long explanation and exactly how to groom your golden retriever.  but I thought I would put it in an easy-to-understand 10 step process. We all like the efficiency of simplicity in this current day and age.

So I thought I’d give you something which you apparently familiar with. And it’s easier to understand so if you do get stuck at any point it’s easy for you to identify what the problem is and potentially reach out to me for some answers.

All of the tools mentioned inside of the post will be later explained as to where you can purchase them from as well as how you would use them. For the moment just taking the basic information of what you need to do and then we’ll get more into the complicated stuff later.

Ok, so let’s get started! Here are the steps to follow:

Grooming Guide
  1. Brush your golden down from head to toe using a slicker brush.
  2. Use a de-matting rake to detangle any matted hair on your gorgeous body.
  3. Bathe your golden retriever with warm water and quality dog shampoo.
  4. Dry you’re golden down with warm towels and a blow dryer if possible.
  5. Bathe golden down again a second time with the slicker brush after the bath.
  6. Trim your golden hair down over their body and then down to the feet using a pair of specially designed fur scissors.
  7. Neaten up around the edges using trimming scissors.
  8. Cut down your Goldens toenails using a pair of nail clippers designed for dogs.
  9. Give your Golden’s coat a final brush to remove any excess hair from the trimming.
  10. Apply flea and take preventative to your dog’s fur to complete the Grooming process.

Also, if needed you may need to clean out your puppy’s ears from time to time. but to determine that you must first take a look to see if it’s needed. And that’s really about it.

Honestly, you can get all fancy with this stuff but it always boils down to the same basic steps. so you may find online that there are many different methods. But a lot of the time it’s simply the same 10 steps reformed in different ways.

So now that you know how to groom an adult dog.  Let’s move onto if you were grooming a puppy…As you may have a puppy and have specific questions based around them. Don’t worry at all, as I will be covering everything in the following sections.

What if you have a puppy?

I don’t know where the rumor first started but you will see that a lot of people recommend you don’t bring a puppy until 6 months old. That couldn’t be further from the truth as the estimated age you can start grooming a puppy is around 16 weeks old.

Whilst many of you may be scared to go ahead and groom your puppy for the first time…I can surely recommend that it’s quite similar to grooming an adult but you just have to take it a little bit easier.

That means that you should be keeping things short and sweet to be precise. So when we talk about the subject or trimming. I would highly avoid any in death or detailed trimming of a puppy as they probably haven’t even developed enough there yet to be trimmed.

It tends to be more of a need trimming process more than taking away the excess process. You get the point…The approach you need to have in mind when tackling this… is to ask yourself the question of how you would treat a baby.

When you look at things like this, it’s a lot easier to understand what steps are best suited for a puppy. So that’s what approach I tend to take and it usually guides you in the right direction.

If you are doing something that could cause potential harm however then I do recommend you contact a professional if you need some assistance in regards to grooming. And that’s it for puppies really, as there’s not much to it.

Where to get the tools?

Just below! everything has been listed out for you to check out below this text. Make sure to read the review of each product carefully first. That way you’ll make sure to avoid buying the wrong things.

Tested Tools!

It was made a priority in the title to note that I personally tested all of these tools.  all of the tools listed below are going to be tools that I have tested over a 6-month period with my golden retriever Bella.

It’s always great when a website recommends tools but they haven’t actually tried it out themselves. This website was not created for that purpose as it is more tailored around being a friendly neighbor next door giving you some friendly advice of the best things to get for your golden.

So everything has been put through the ups and downs to see exactly how they last over a period of time as well as how efficient they are too.

All of the tools that are finally decided to list in this section are the tools that I think perform the best through my testing.  which will be of most benefit to you.

So next we get into the most exciting part of this post. Which are the actual 5 tools that I decided to list in order to help you groom your golden retriever (the right way!).

The 5 best grooming tools for goldens

The first Tudor I’m going to recommend is a slicker brush. This is the generic brush that you were used for almost everything when it comes to brushing and down your dog’s coat. So I decided to recommend the best brush that outperforms others throughout my testing.

That brush is called :

1. FURminator Soft Grooming Slicker Brush

After using this brush for about six months, it was still able to hold through tough use and be very durable. To be honest it still does the job as good as new. Here’s an image of how it works in action.

This place is really good for getting out any tangled on matted hair is dry out your golden outer coat. It also has an Antimicrobial plastic surround it to prevent any bacteria from fro lingering around.

The brush also has a stated dual flex design, which does actually make a difference when you’re brushing down your dog. As a kind of glass in whatever direction you’re going in.

Overall it’s a brilliant brush which is why it made it to the top of my list. And to be quite honest it’s the most used tool on the list too. Next, let’s move onto product number two that is recommended as a second essential tool to your kit.

2. Dog rake deshedding de-matting rake

As you can see from the above-listed title. this product doesn’t have a particular brand name. And I think they would be a lot more successful in cells if they did.

However, when it comes to raking the undercoat of your golden retriever, it does exactly what it says on the tin. and to be quite frank, that’s all I’m currently looking for.

As you can see they have tailored it around Golden’s, which is why they also have an image on the front of a Golden Retriever for the rake. This rake is designed to target all of the undercoat furs, that may be loose or shedding from your dog.

It will do so whilst leaving the outer coat intact. This is a great benefit as it will prevent any damage to your dogs out of code which is used as a protection for your dog during their lifetime.

You’re able to gather quite a lot of hair in one stroke using this rake and it does a great job at removing tons of hair each time that you sweep it through.

3. Pet Magasin Grooming Scissors Kits

Next to recommend that you get yourself a pair of dog grooming scissors. I always go for the Amazon choice products as I know Amazon would only put their stamp on it if the product has given great overall service.

These scissors are the ones that I currently use and it was no doubt about it that I didn’t need to even purchase the second paired to test as this work just fine.

You will be using scissors on a regular basis for many different purposes throughout the course of your dog’s life.

This pack comes with a pair of two different scissors that can target different areas of the body. So for example, if you were trimming down their feet and then moving on to the tail then you would have a specific pair of scissors that target each specific area.

4. Safari 770045 Professional Nail Trimmer

This is just a simple pair of dog nail clippers that do the job.  if you’re looking for information on how to go about cutting your dog’s nails then you can check out the video below.

There’s not much to discuss on this topic as it’s just the fear of nail clippers and these are the ones that I purchased without having to test any further.

The way I test is mainly tailored around what does the job most efficiently.  if I find that the first product I purchased does just add then there is no need for me to continue testing.

With the brushes, on the other hand, I did purchase 5 in total along with the rakes too. But when it comes to things like nail clippers. I’m just looking for what does the job right.

4. Bayer K9 Advantix II Flea, Tick and Mosquito Prevention

flea prevention for dogs

The last product analyst is purely just based around preventing any unwanted pests.  so I have decided to place the current product that I’m using at the moment to you prevent any pics of fleas from my golden spur coat.

This product was tested against 3 others and appears to do the best job at preventing pests.

It also comes in different doses that can be designed for small or medium sized dogs 2 large breeds. So no matter how big your Golden is, or if you even have a different dog then I’m sure they will cater to your needs.

So in this post, we covered how you can get the best golden retriever grooming tools for your essential kit. Everything on this list has been provided to you from Amazon of where each link on the page takes you through to the current listings prices.

I have personally tested these products, and this is what I believe to be best to do the job for each of the tasks mentioned above. If there is something you want me to test the hasn’t been listed on this post, then feel free to get in touch or leave a comment below.

For now, here’s a link to the products mentioned above of where you can get a complete tool kit or grooming kit for your golden retriever.
